How to Save Browser Sessions (and Never Lose Work Again)

A practical guide to session management — from OneTab to cloud-synced workspaces.

Browser sessions are fragile. Chrome updates. Your laptop battery dies. A restart happens. And 40 tabs of context — research, half-written drafts, reference pages — vanish.

This guide covers three levels of session management, from the simplest fix to full cloud backup.

Level 1: Native Chrome session restore

Chrome's built-in "Continue where you left off" setting (Settings → On startup) restores your last session after a normal close. It does not survive crashes, forced restarts, or manual tab clearing.

It's better than nothing. But "better than nothing" doesn't cut it for work that matters.

Level 2: Manual session saving with an extension

Extensions like OneTab and Session Buddy let you manually save your open tabs to a list. This protects against crashes because the list is stored persistently.

The problem: flat lists don't preserve context. After saving 50 tabs and closing them, you re-open them to a wall of links with no structure.

Level 3: Named workspaces with cloud sync

This is what SeshTab does. Instead of saving a flat list, you create named Workspaces — "Client project", "Research", "Side project" — and save your tabs into each one.

When you restore a Workspace, you're not just reopening tabs. You're reopening your mental context: the project you were in, the tabs you had open, the order they were in.

With Pro, Workspaces sync to the cloud. Your sessions survive reinstalls, new machines, and browser updates. You can open your work laptop's session on your home machine in seconds.

How to set it up

Install SeshTab, open the extension popup, and click "Save workspace". Name it after what you're working on. Close the tabs. Your RAM is freed. Your context is saved.

When you need them back: open the popup, find the workspace, click Restore. You're back where you were.
